BBC: Freeport mine strike in Indonesia

Thousands of workers are staging a month-long strike at one of the world's largest gold and copper mines in the remote Indonesian province of Papua.

Union leaders said production had been paralysed at the Grasberg mine, which is run by US firm Freeport-McMoran.

The workers want at least a five-fold increase in their current salary of about $3 (£1.90) an hour.

Analysts say a previous stoppage in July was a factor in raising copper prices around theworld.

  1. whoops sorry there was a little typo

Okay so I read the whole article, and the third sentence from below got me.

Freeport is stripping Papua of its natural resources without returning anything to the locals. And the strike is based on that, so everything make sense.

I think our natural resources mainly should be for our country, for ourselves. Not for some other country.

  2. As a Papua Citizen and know a little bit of this largest gold and copper mines, i agree with the decision that has been taken by the workers.
Freeport is one of the biggest gold and copper mines companies in the world with a massive income, but in the other hand, the company just paid the workers with unequal payment inspite of the workers's risk in working, ex. a murder by the irresponsible people that often happened.

I do agree with Gilang's opinion, and if Indonesia could organize the natural resources by itself, Indonesia would be a better country.

  3. Is it okay to post a comment here since this article was posted last month?
I think, the decision that the workers took to go striking is the best solution since the Freeport didn't pay attention to the rights groups' accusation. The best way to pass the aspiration is striking the company.
In my opinion, this incident happened as the effect of globalization in Indonesia. As we know, because of globalization, poor people will do whatever kind of job as long as they get the money. But in this case, the workers have already realized that they can't be fooled anymore. I think this is the improvement of Indonesian people's way of thinking.
