Moral Dilemma #1

You have a very annoying colleague at work. Let's call her Prima. She isn't very good at her job. You are always correcting her mistakes and always covering up for her when her mistakes cause trouble for everyone in your department. On top of it all, she has very irritating personal habits like eating smelly fried beans (pete goreng) in the office and listening to D'Massive on her computer. One day she applies for a transfer to another department. The department's boss asks you for a reference. In other words, do you recommend her to the boss? What do you do next?

Your answers and thoughts please in the COMMENTS below.

  1. I will tell the thruth about her works and her irritating personal habits. I don't want to make the boss have big hope while employing her, but in the fact her works are always terrible.

I will tell the boss that she is NOT very good at handling the job. No intention of being mean, just telling the truth...

  3. @ Gizti: "those are extremely irritating habits you picked up for the story, Adrian" [no need for "up"]

Eating 'pete' and listening to D'Massive? What other "irritating personal habits" can you think of that are on a par with pete & annoying pop?

  4. I will not tell the truth about her works and her habits. I will recommend her to the boss, because this is the only way to get her out of my face and I will enjoy working everyday without covering and correcting her mistakes again.

  10. I will tell the truth to the big boss about her personality, because why the boss have to pay for someone who is incompetent? Here I try to act as a professional as I can. Hopefully, if the director rejects her, she can learn from the rejection.

I agree with Asdi for the point about professionalism at work. In the real working world , we will definitely find outstandingly numerous kind of characters from our fellow workers. Being a manager in this case is an extra responsibility burdened on our shoulder. From my own experience, from even a smaller case such as this kind of trouble happened during my term as the school's students' council, I will try tell the truth to the other member or manager. You cannot lie about working quality of someone to other people because of pity. Instead, you have to tell them the truth, and as a help you can give to your employee, you can try to find solutions about her irritating working habits with the other manager. Here we must show integrity and willingness to improve the working quality of our company regardless of the different department that we are responsible upon.

  13. I will not recommend her to the boss because of several reasons.

The first one is she won't learn anything and she will always be the same annoying person if nobody tell her how annoying she is.

Second reason is she won't be able to handle the job and she will get fired sooner or later.

  14. I will not recommend her to the boss. I will tell the boss about Prima's bad performance. Hopefully, he can do something about her. Maybe giving her a warning?

Moreover, I don't want to lie to my boss. Sooner or later, he will discover Prima's bad habit and regret hiring her. He will also remember that I was the one who recommended Prima to her. He will feel annoyed at me and think of me as a liar. That will be bad for my image & performance

  15. I will not recommend her to the boss. Talking about professionalism, I know her working quality in my department. if she moves to another department, she will just make the same old mess in different place. I'd rather discuss about her bad performance with my boss and find the win win solution.

P.S : Dear Adrian, do you think eating pete is categorized as irritating personal habit? Because i like eating pete so much. But don't worry i will not eat pete in your class.

  17. I would tell the boss about her personality and capability of working, I'll let the boss decide. I would also tell the boss about her habits, but I won't say they're bad. It is possible that the boss likes to eat Pete goreng and listening to D'masiv as well, lol.

@Adrian "Eating 'pete' and listening to D'Massive? What other "irritating personal habits" can you think of that are on a par with pete & annoying pop?"
My answer will be listening to Ayu Ting Ting's song again and again, hahaha.
